Lo2: Vlog5

Intro

Welcome back this is vlog 5. In this v log I will be talking about
1.      How products impacted and affect the audience
2.        How the product and other feature of Big John @ Breakfast represent the audience
3.      Legal and ethical issues
4.        Is the role of regulatory bodies

(Title screen say product impacts and affects)

The Hypodermic Theory

The first things to talk about when on the topic of how the audience is affected by the thing that they hear on radio and other media outlets is that there are two main media affect theory. First is the Hypodermic Theory. The Hypodermic theory also knows as the Passive Audience Theory, Marxist theory and Magic Bullet theory.  The theory was made by a group called Marxist leaded by a man named Theodore Adorno in the 1930 at Frankfurt School. The theory is that any thing that persons hear on the radio they will believe and that the media can control the public in this why. Making them buy products and change their views and how they behave.  This theory is now out dated but is still applied to thing like game, films and music but for a radio station in would be applied to advertisement and what the host say and recommends for us that is Big John. Such as when Big John talks about what he has been watching and thing he is exited for like when he was talking about the new season of 24 and he like’s that is will be set in London. So the theory is that know every one who heard that will now be exited about the new season of 24.  A good example for the advertisement is when they play the Meca Bingo advert (play advert here) if the theory is right now every one will what to play bingo but only at Meca Bingo if they heard it.

Active Audience Theoey

The second Media affect theory that I will talk about is Active Audience theory. This theory was thought up by and had research done by Stuart Hall between the years of 1973 and 1980. The theory goes that every body is different so every audience member will decode what they have just heard or seen differently from another member of the same audience.  Even if there is a preferred meaning. The theory also states that most people will decode things differently depending on there background. Thing that would be taken in for defining their background would be Gender, age, culture, social grade.  This will give the media out let a better idea on how there audiences will take what is being said. If I use the same example as before with Meca Bingo but the active audience theory instead of Hypodermic theory applied. So when the advert is aired on Big John @ Breakfast instead of just thinking that Meca Bingo is the best the audience member will be more incline but will not make there final dissension on just what was said on big John @ Breakfast. This theory is that the audience member still has the final say on what they do.

Analyse of Hallam FM advertisement

You can tell a lot about the audience from what is advertised on the radio show. For instance a good way to find the social grade of the audience is to look and see if there are any moneylenders advertised (play advert here).
On Hallam FM Wonger is advertised ever half-hour are so. This tells me that big group of their listener use the services of a moneylender often. You can find the dominating gender by the products and shops that are advertised for instance Bathroom Conpair.com and Carpet right. (Pay the two adverts her)  Women like to decorate there house more then men so it is most likely that Hallam FM and Big John @ Breakfast.

Legal and Ethical

The next thing I will be taking about is the Legal and ethical issues. Nearly all of the time Hallam FM will not comment on big new story so that there is no chance that they will stumble in to a controversy. When they talk about any news they talk about thing on TV shows such as X factor and splash (add clip here).  When an artist make music Hallam FM/Bauer must pay a royalty to the artist. Such as when they played the song (add one of the songs here).  A royalty is an amount of money that is paid to an PRS (this is payment to the artist) or PPL( payment to record label) for the use of their music. If the radio station has paid for an MCPS (payment blanket) they do not have to pay for royalist over and over again for one song they get to use as many times as they what for a period of time. if they did not pay the royalty rights they would be braking copyright law. They would not have to pay if they had permission to do so. You would have to ask for permission from the person who holds the performing rights. PRS is the group within Britain that organises, holds and records all the holder of performing right license.

Ofcom

Hallam FM and there for Big John @ Breakfast is regulated by OFCOM. OFCOM’s job is to look at what is said on Hallam FM to see if anything hateful has been said towards any group, religion or race. There only been one incident that I could find and that Is when someone who called up and said something racist. They also check to see if they have been promoting alcohol, smoking, drugs and violence.  Big John never does this throw out his show (play clip here). OFCOM also look to see if they are any breaches of privacy. By this I mean when Big John is talking about a member of the public not talking about them by name if they don’t what to and not giving away information like house address and any other sensitive information.

Intro

Hello again its me harry from H.F.S Media. This is the third part in the five part series. In the first Vlog I talked about he terms use in radio. In the second Vlog 1 I talked about Hallam FM in the third one I will it talking about what they take into consideration when they are targeting that demographic audience.

Gender

Gender is the first and most basic things most radio shows look at when trying to find out that target demographic gender. This easy because all they will have to do is make a survey and ask them to state there gender and if they like Big John @ Breakfast Hallam FM or not. For Big John @ Breakfast women where the dominating gender as they where at 51% listener ship. This is why most adverts are aimed at women rather then men.

Age

Big John @ Breakfasts will be looking at the age rang so that they now how mature and up to date there audience is. This affects the type of things that will be advertised as if it is more mature they will advertise more refined things. It also dictates the type of things that will be taken about as if there is a younger audience it will be child friendly.

Social Grade/Spending power

Something else they look at is social class of there listener Big John @ Breakfast was 41% A,B,C. This means that the working class is the dominating social grade. This will carry over to Big John @ Breakfast. Because of the social grade most of the thing that will be advertised will be in a sale or it will be cheap. As the average person in working class does not have a lot of spear money to go around spending.

Listener attention span

Something they my also looking at when looking at there listeners is how long they are tuned in for. if the average listener is listening for two hours they will not repeat any thing throw out so that that Big John does not get repetitive and keep the show fresh to the listener. They will not repeat anything for about 2 hours are so. here is a clip from an audience member talking about why they like Big Job @ Breakfast.

Listener profile

My name is Linda Chatsworth I am 38 years old and happy go lucky I am up for most things. I am an avid listener of Big John @ Breakfast and Hallam FM in general.  I Listens to Big John @ Breakfast on average 2 and a bit hours a week. I was told this is over the estimated time of the average listener lucky me. One of the reasons I likes listening to Big John @ Breakfast is because they update me on the big bands that are playing in my local area. I also like listening because of the hosts. I find Big John a very likeable and real person, someone who I could call friend and share a drink with.  The other two James and Jennie are really good co-hosts I like that they have their little things to do. Like Jennies traffic report and when James makes a game for Big John to Play I think they are proper funny and when they get me involved the listener I mean. Like when I had to guess the song the Hallamster was trying to play or when they gave me a two second bit of a song a guess it from that. I had a go on that one but a got wrong. I guess Moonlight sonata turned out it was something called poker face by some lady. When I am dropping the kids off they like listening to the Hallamster they find him really funny I do not see it. I like the ads. I like how there are all for thing that are my area. Like this place called Meca Bingo I went there the other day it was pretty good I won £100 I would recommend you get go. Well I will have to go now see you later.

Intro

Hello again it me Harry from H.F.S Media this is part 2 of the 5 Vlogs. The Big John @ Breakfast that I will be looking at was aired on the 2nd of December 2013.

Purpose

The purpose of Big John @ Breakfast is to entertain the listener. The show its self is very child friendly. This is most likely because of the time that Big John is aired at. The show is on between six and ten so most parents at this time are taking there children to school so they have to watch what they say. During big john @ Breakfast there are points where they talk about the new. There is a news report about what has been happening through out the week. along with a weather and traffic report. The news report is most likely there to give the parents something that may interests them.

Genre

The genre of Big John @ Breakfast is modern contemporary and aims its music for the people in the age rang of 25-45. They all way play the new biggest music that is in the charts. Big John @ Breakfast also has a segment called school years where Big John plays music from the around that past 20 years.

Station information

Big John @ Breakfast uses digital broadcasting; digital broadcasting is also called D.A.B. Because it being a radio show the producer has to make sure that the show is lively so that the listener does not get board and capture the listeners attentions.

Structure

The structure of big john @ breakfast is where they intro dues there self then they will talk for a bit about a subject of there choosing then they will plat two or three songs if it is three song Big John will say something between but this will be very brief. After they talk a bit more there will be a news report with the traffic and weather. This goes in a cycle the cycle will be about an hour long. The show works overall because it is casual and informal. This also helps theme reaches a bigger audience lisnership.

Style

The main jingly throw out Big John @ Breakfast is some one saying Hallam FM I think jingle  its self  connotes the theme of the show as the jingle is upbeat and nice to listen to. All of the songs that are aired are new and popular this tells me that big john is up to date with what people that will be listening to the show. The music also fits in with theme of the show.Big John @ Breakfast talks about a big Christmas party that just happen. He will be talking about this a lot because Christmas it just around the corner. I think that Big John has a script telling him what to talk about but not word for word.

V log 1

Intro

Hello I am Harry the C.E.O of H.F.S Media. I am here today to tell you a little about the company I own and the massively successful industry of media.H.F.S is a newly formed company that was made to educate the public on the lingo and world of media. The vlog you are watching now is one of the way we are trying to do this. It would be best to start off on what is media. Media is a new thing in the world. There are 3 main industries publish (things like newspapers and magazines), radio (that is self explanortery) and TV (televised programs, films).  A company make a product for a specific audience. The things that take in to consideration are social grade, age, religion, gender and race. Conglomerates will make a product aimed at a set of the things I have just said. Conglomerates will make a newspaper for people of high class then make a seconds for people of a different one like working. An example of thing Bauer they own the times and the sun. This will make them a lot more money as the two newspaper are aimed a very different audience. An independent company is a company that is note owned by a conglomerate. If a company is owned by a conglomerate is becomes a subsidiary of that conglomerate.

Ownership

Ownership in its simplest term is who owns something. But it gets much more complicated then that. There are conglomerate, independent, cross media and subsidiary. There are a couple of ways that a company can become a conglomerate. There is old fashion way of just buying out other company’s/competitors. Then there is the seconds an institutional convergence where two or more company’s join to make a more successful one. The Radio station I will be looking at is Hallam FM. Hallam FM is a subsidiary of Bauer. Bauer is a massive Cross-Media Conglomerate.

Operating Modle

Hallam FM has different departments that work well together if there are any big events happening with in Hallam FM the marketing department will make sure that it has a wide rang of different way that the listeners can find out more information about it. To make the brand of Hallam FM bigger they are sponsors of different place such as Ponds Forge, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United

Programmes

Hallam FM has many popular and much loved presenters like Big John, Seven White and Simon Morykin. All of them have there own show on Hallam FM. Big John has Big John @ Breakfast Steve White has Drivetime and Simon Morykin has playing you the variety.

Market Position
Hallam FM uses a company called RAJAR (RAJAR are "Radio Joint Audience Research Limited" and are the best at measuring radio audiences in the UK, owned by the BBC.) to find out the listener figures and to see if Hallam FM is still number 1. The figures are also use to make Hallam FM a better radio station for the listener to enjoy.

Competitors

Hallam FM has many competitors. The biggest are BBC radio 1 and Capital FM. Bauer uses a company called RAJAR (RAJAR are "Radio Joint Audience Research Limited" and are the best at measuring radio audiences in the UK, owned by the BBC.) to find out the listener figures and to see if Hallam FM is still number 1.
